Vegas Drift VD29 – ProAm 2013 – RND4 – into the mists of battles

My day begun at DMV picking up another 10 day temp as I cannot pass smog before registration is up.

After I picked up my temp, I attempted to drive it around the block and it was bogging down soo bad, so I went a head and adjusted the timing a tad, doing so helped it temporary but regardless it still didn’t feel right.

Drove her to the VD29 practice event / Vegas ProAm 2013  – Round 4.  This is where I needed to get a feel for my car so I played around in the skid pad some, adjusted a few things while doing so.

I ended up shredding my first round of tires just before lunch at the skid pad. Not confident of my car as she has been giving me hiccups.

This event had a huge turn out, as this is the last event and formula d licenses will be given out this run. Most of the time I sat down and watched pro-am.

Due to the weather it was really hard to be out there from the high heat and high humidity.  After lunch I changed out my tires and attempted to skid where I lost all power to my car, all of  a sudden unable to start until I messed with the blaster coil setup that I had no time to test to be sure that it was working.  So I adjusted the wiring just a tad and went back out there where I actually broke my driver seat finally.

In Pro-Am my buddy Waylon made #18 this round much better then before I say.

Here is an image dump of my photos taken out there, I got a huge list of todo with my s12.  So will be taking the time when it cools down more.

Fairlady Silvia – Update – 2

2013-08-04 12.19.53I am having soo many problems with my project lately, it has mentally drained me. I really wished I could get some help in restoring this project, alot of times I feel  alone on this project.

I am trying to figure out why my head lights still wont go down. But the reason why my car didn’t make it to VD28 was due to the starter yet again and the Crank Angle Sensor again…  I have been having major issues trying to get my car smogged before vd29, I might not run in vd29 due to I am unable to move it.  I would like to just tow is down and rip it up the tires I have, but seems like I cannot find a tow to support it.  I will attempt to get a 1 day temp that morning, if I cannot get one for that day I might just say forget about it again and just go chill. Sucks, I really want to drive and improve my skills. Recently I just learned that to obtain classic plates I cannot have it smogged, so that means I have to wait 90 days. Which sucks because I really hate driving the firebird, especially the way that it feels. It feels like I am driving a super heavy car on bad shocks and the power sucks with this v6 engine in the bird. One day I will have it running as my daily again, until then it sits 🙁

Sucks is I finally upgraded the stereo system in her too, just for my daily and long cruises.

Vegas Drift 28 – Darkness sets in.

Finally I am now able to write this blog up, as long awaits.

I was unable to drive this night, and I wanted to drive really bad. I spent 3/4 of the day before the event started to get my car running.  I couldn’t get her running when as I attempted to it just wouldn’t work, installed a push button start to see if it works in any way.

So instead of keep working at it, I went a head and drive out to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Instead of driving I went to spectate instead.  It really made me feel let down on myself.  But regardless I had fun.

The night had 2 tracks laid out, 1 advanced and 1 small reverse R. they returned to the old parking lot near were U-Drift used to be before they went out of business. the advanced course had a k-rail which was pretty epic as people love to get close in.

I had a few ride-a-longs to help me out of my self loathing depression from my car. I took some pictures and a few very blurry videos of the event.

There is no 2 step’n in hell… this is vd27

110 degrees… on a typical las vegas summer day, and I ask myself why am I here? because I am here to drift.. I am here to support the only grassroots left in Las Vegas…   I am here to support Team Silhouette Autosports.

The morning was good, I had a few starting issues on track where I needed a jump start / push start to get moving. So I installed the positive cable, and I seriously messed up.  I ran like 3 times at the practice course and then moved to doing doughnuts in the skid pad where the car decided to shut off completely. Turns out I didn’t double check my cable work and fried my new pos battery cable.  I went a head and  put back on the old cable and still it wouldn’t turn back on. Waylon suggested it is the negative cable cut it back a little and try again.

So I did so and now it is all working. I went and had fun back in the practice course. Where I was a bit intimidated because all I know how to do successfully is clutch kick to transfer the power to the rear tires.   At the first turn it is a long turn then it gets to the end of the turn it gets to a sharp turn, where I would feel I can actually get sideways in then move forward but it still feels a bit uncontrolled. I started today with keeping the speed slow where I still feel like I am coming in too fast.

I attempted to do a feint drift but when I turn left and right the car follows so does the weight and the transfer is instant and I retain grip, as I must not be doing something right because I am getting way too much grip.

My goal is to do a slick smooth initiation that I can do the float feel around the corner and the feel I am more in control of the drift.  I feel I need to come over the fear of being intimidated of the course and learn more with technique.   The grip I also suspect that heat was a major factor as it was 110 – 112 out with about 135 – 140F on the pavement.

Practice course was on the left color coded with the white car, Pro-Am Round 3 took place on the red car to the right. I actually wiped out after the second turn if I gave it too much gas after I would clutch it.  The course is longer then it looks, and the white cars make it look easy.   As it feels like you can fit 3 of the cars side by side in that course. I seen the pro’s actually drift it and carry the long drift in the first corner, but the second corner I seen alot of people have trouble possibly to the heat.

Till the next practice, or till next ProAm + Practice.

Fairlady Silvia! the magic returns…

My write up is about how I encountered a big issue with my silvia.  I was having so much issues one day when I turned on my car, the initial start was hard as it kept turning right back off.  Then when it started the idle would go near dead.

First I thought it was a vaccum leak, but it wasn’t. Changed distributor cap due to it was cracked at the top, changed rotor due to it was time to change it.

Then checked the ECU codes, Z31 was telling me that the Idle air control vavle is bad.  So I decided to down grade to the SEv6 Maf and ECU.  With this the idle is better but not much. Checked the codes witht he sev6 ecu and turns out the Fuel Temp Sensor in the FPR is bad and Cylinder Head Temp Sensor is also bad….
So went a head and done a timing belt change, CHT Sensor changed, replaced the FPR, and timing belt pully. To see if that helps in anyway but it did not change anything. Did a full tune up plugs wires,  and did not change a thing.

So after all of that it accrued to me that the issue has to be the distributor.

Because:

  1. The rotor cap was broke in a spot where the rotor was hitting
  2. When I removed the cap, I can lift up and down on the rotor.

So I pulled the distributor to check, I wasn’t to sure if the distributor is supposed to have this much play if at most any play at all. So I called a buddy on that and sure enough that is the problem. I went to the junk yard and picked up a matching distributor from a z31 and when I installed it, the car  now idles perfectly.

I have made a few videos with my phone to help figure this problem out.

Here is a video after installing the new distributor.
